Web Development Stages

I would like to explain to you about the stage where we do our web development. By understanding this, expectation is managed.

Hence, when we present a WIP to you guys, we would refer it based on the stage so everyone knows what to expect.

I would like to use an analogy on building websites by using building a house.

Stage 1 : Foundations
We begin developing a website by laying the foundations. Just like building a house, we lay the bricks, prepare the space for rooms. So when you walk into the house, you see the house with the rooms and the kitchen, but no furniture etc. We will paint the house, expecting some changes.

So in this stage of WIP, you will see:
1. A website with most of the navigations sorted out
2. A general approved look and feel
3. Minimal animation

From here, you would be able to see how this site navigates, and give comments based on the links and the site structure.

Stage 2: Function
Then we will make the website fully functional. Just like the house is now equipped with fans, lights, doors, etc.
1. The website to be with the backend systems
2. Modules like “forward to friend”, “print this page” to be working
3. Minimal animation

From here, you would be able to test the functions, the website is mostly functional and ready to go live once furnish.

From here its also expected that we shall had received most of the content from client.

Stage 3 : Refine
This is the stage where we refine the work to make it LOOK great, FEEL great. Just like adding furniture and decorations to the house, we add the touch of taste to the house.
1. Refining the animation and the flow of website
2. Inserting the approved CONTENT
3. Website populated with the right copy & images

This is the last stage before we go LIVE. Comments on a detailed manner are appreciated. Checking on content is important. Once everything is approve, we shall go live.

Please understand that these stages may overlap on certain items, depending on the manner of the project.

CELCOM 3G BEATS MAXIS 3G HANDS DOWN IN A ROAD TEST!

Enough about all these prepaid war attacks and comparing lowest call rates etc, that is so yesterday’s news, okay?! What’s hot right now is in the Mobile World Magazine, Dec 06 issue. The MW team actually went on a road test at 15 locations in the Klang Valley, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya to prove that Celcom is the fastest and widest when it comes to 3G performance and coverage!

Get this: Celcom’s 3G download rates averaged 330.8 Kbps (this is 86% of 3G’s theoretical maximum of 384 Kbps) while Maxis’ 3G rates averaged 155 Kbps (only 40% of the max, HALF of Celcom’s speed). Celcom wins hands down for upload rates again, with an average of 55.2 Kbps and Maxis bagging a 45.1 Kbps average. Surprised yet?

One very interesting yet bizarre reading to highlight also. While they were unable to obtain any reading for Maxis 3G at some locations (e.g. 7-Eleven store along Jln Yong Shook Lin and around PJ State area), the download reading was also very low at 200 Kbps at the KLCC Park (which is beside Menara Maxis) and there’s no upload reading at all! The reverse applies to Celcom though, with a 364 Kbps download speed and a 59.4 Kbps upload speed at Jln Yong Shook Lin and a 368 Kbps download speed and 59.4 upload speed at the KLCC Park/Menara Maxis area.

So, who wins the 3G battle? I guess if you’re a 3G freak and think that video calling is more personal, Celcom is the way to go, hands down! Maxis 3G users - time for a switchover for you guys, maybe?

This is the first sigil i had conciously created.

The main element of this sigil is the Ankh - which is the symbol of eternal life. But how do man achieve eternal life or simply put, immortality?

By leaving a legacy. By being remembered, by being spoken of, admired and loved long after our physically body merges with the universe. And that is where the element which resembles the thunder comes in. The element of superiority.

The element which resembles an eye is the representation of the self consciousness, awareness, the “I”. This element is at the bottom of the sigil, to remind of our roots. Only but understanding our roots, only we can surpass our heritance, ourselves.

This project is done for Petronas Science Center, as an exhibit during their SurfSmart campaign.
This game is installed in an real size motorcycle exhibit, hence it allows players to play the game by riding on the motorcyle.

I ve done a component so that it reads the motorcyle's parts such as its accelerator, its brake, its steering and etc.

This projects using Macromedia Flash 6, to simulate a 3D perspective environment.
This game also can be played online.

This was done at the early stage of FLASH 6, where we finally have the DRAWING API.
Installed in a TouchScreen Panel, to create an intereactive exhibit so that visitors of the National Sceince Center can create their caligraphy and print it on a Branded Paper as surveniour.

This is an interactive exhibit, located at the Skybridge Visitor Entrance, Petronas Twins Tower. It is connected to ULTRASONIC Depth Sensor which will measure a person's height.

During the screensaver mode, and if the sensor detects a person near the exhibit, the program will start.

The users height will then get measured by the sensor, and interaction begins...

Introducing RDF

Resource Description Framework, as its name implies, is a framework for describing and interchanging metadata. It is built on the following rules.

1. A Resource is anything that can have a URI; this includes all the Web's pages, as well as individual elements of an XML document. An example of a resource is a draft of the document you are now reading and its URL is http://www.textuality.com/RDF/Why.html
2. A Property is a Resource that has a name and can be used as a property, for example Author or Title. In many cases, all we really care about is the name; but a Property needs to be a resource so that it can have its own properties.
3. A Statement consists of the combination of a Resource, a Property, and a value. These parts are known as the 'subject', 'predicate' and 'object' of a Statement. An example Statement is "The Author of http://www.textuality.com/RDF/Why.html is Tim Bray." The value can just be a string, for example "Tim Bray" in the previous example, or it can be another resource, for example "The Home-Page of http://www.textuality.com/RDF/Why.html is http://www.textuality.com."
4. There is a straightforward method for expressing these abstract Properties in XML, for example:

RDF is carefully designed to have the following characteristics.

Independence
Since a Property is a resource, any independent organization (or even person) can invent them. I can invent one called Author, and you can invent one called Director (which would only apply to resources that are associated with movies), and someone else can invent one called Restaurant-Category. This is necessary since we don't have a GOD to take care of it for us.
Interchange
Since RDF Statements can be converted into XML, they are easy for us to interchange. This would probably be necessary even if we did have a GOD.
Scalability
RDF statements are simple, three-part records (Resource, Property, value), so they are easy to handle and look things up by, even in large numbers. The Web is already big and getting bigger, and we are probably going to have (literally) billions of these floating around (millions even for a big Intranet). Scalability is important.
Properties are Resources
Properties can have their own properties and can be found and manipulated like any other Resource. This is important because there are going to be lots of them; too many to look at one by one. For example, I might want to know if anyone out there has defined a Property that describes the genre of a movie, with values like Comedy, Horror, Romance, and Thriller. I'll need metadata to help with that.
Values Can Be Resources
For example, most web pages will have a property named Home-Page which points at the home page of their site. So the values of properties, which obviously have to include things like title and author's name, also have to include Resources.
Statements Can Be Resources
Statements can also have properties. Since there's no GOD to provide useful assertions for all the resources, and since the Web is way too big for us to provide our own, we're going to need to do lookups based on other people's metadata (as we do today with Yahoo!). This means that we'll want, given any Statement such as "The Subject of this Page is Donkeys", to be able to ask "Who said so? And When?" One useful way to do this would be with metadata; so Statements will need to have Properties.

MYNIC administers the name space for the .my top level domain under which seven second level domains exist, namely .com.my, .net.my, .org.my, .gov.my, .edu.my .mil.my and .name.my.

I had many domains (.com.my) here... used thier system many many times, but it never fails to confuse me.

I really cant explain my frustration. Pls try it... you 'll understand.

Just expereinced DIGI's customer support... what i can say that it just lack the human touch. I wanted to speak to a person, but there is NO WAY ( or its hidden in too many layers ) i can get to speak to anyone... computer computer computer..

I agree that the computer operated support system will safe cost, but it sure does drive me away when i feel that DIGI is does not care about talking to us.

Maxis : 7/10 - Getting worst, waiting time enough to make 3 cups of coffee... However, whats good is that it is very personalized... They know my name, language etc.. Its more "friendly" i might say..

Celcom : 6/10 - Getting better, but it is not personalize, speaks to me in Malay, noisy background, have to repeat my name & identity over & over... can't they learn from maxis to remember our name, number etc?

Digi : 4/10 - I just dont like talking to computers while everyday i am infront of a PC!

What is a Ubiq Windows ? Have you seen "Minority Report" or "The Island"? You know the cool tehcnology where you can just use gestures of your hand to control the content of the computer screen?

There will be a demonstration on Celcom 3G using this technology at SUNWAY PYRAMID at 29 July onwards.
